Embracing West Coast Wedding Weather: The Romance of Rainy Days on Vancouver Island

An interview-driven piece with photographer Kimberley Kufaas on why rain and shifting coastal weather add romance and cinematic atmosphere to Vancouver Island and Gulf Islands weddings, rather than detracting from them.

Rain is not an interruption on the West Coast. It is part of the landscape, part of the rhythm, and part of the identity of this coastline. West Coast wedding weather moves in its own way, shifting from soft drizzle to dramatic clouds to sudden beams of light. It often changes character multiple times in a single afternoon. For couples planning a celebration on Vancouver Island or the Gulf Islands, this unpredictability can be intimidating at first. Yet, it is also what makes the region one of the most extraordinary places in the world to get married.

Photographer Kimberley Kufaas, who grew up on the North Island surrounded by the full range of coastal weather, understands this better than almost anyone. Her interview with Folklore Weddings revealed a lifetime of comfort with the elements. She shared that she keeps "a secondary wardrobe" in her car at all times, ready for sunshine, cold wind, or sudden downpour because that is simply the reality of life in this part of the world. "You can get anything," she explained. "It can change within a couple of hours. It is almost like they pull a paper from a hat and hope it is going to do that for the day."

The Magic Rain Brings to a Wedding Day

For Kimberley, rain is not something to avoid. It is something to welcome. She lights up when she talks about how it transforms a wedding day. It deepens colors, softens skin, and wraps a scene in a cinematic atmosphere that cannot be replicated. "I actually get really excited when it starts to rain," she said. Misty air and shifting light create an intimate, dramatic quality. As she put it, "As cheesy as it is, we all love it."

You can get anything. It can change within a couple of hours.

This perspective reframes what many couples fear. Instead of dampening a wedding day, rain enhances it. The scent of wet cedar, the hush of fog moving across the ocean, and the sound of raindrops settling into the forest canopy all create a sensory experience that belongs completely to this coastline.

Why Rain Reflects the Heart of the West Coast

Across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, rainy days reveal the region's truest character. Ceremonies tucked into the forest feel more intimate. Portraits overlooking stormy ocean horizons feel powerful and poetic. Sunny days are beautiful, but rainy days carry a mood that feels purposeful and elemental.

The Couples Who Embrace Coastal Weather

In her interview, Kimberley emphasized that rainy-day weddings are often loved most by couples who approach their wedding day with openness. She notices a shared mindset among those who choose rugged West Coast locations: these are the couples who bring "plan A, plan B, maybe plan C, maybe plan D" and smile through every version of the day.

These couples laugh when the wind lifts a veil, lean close under an umbrella, or brush raindrops from each other's shoulders. Rain highlights intimacy. It invites closeness. It creates images that feel honest, raw, and cinematic.

Where Rainy Day Weddings Become Unforgettable

Throughout the region, rainy-day weddings create scenes that feel almost otherworldly: a misty elopement on Galiano Island, a storm rolling across a Tofino beach during vows, a portrait session on the North Island where fog drifts through the trees like a quiet blessing. In a world where weddings are often expected to look immaculate and predictable, rainy-day celebrations stand apart. And as Kimberley's reflections show, the magic is not in avoiding the storm. The magic is in allowing the West Coast wedding weather to become part of the story.
