Why Folklore Weddings Loves Sea Breeze Lodge on Hornby Island

An editorial love letter to our favourite oceanfront venue in British Columbia

Why Sea Breeze Lodge is the Hornby Island wedding venue we love most, with Stephanie Artuso's photographs from Kirsten and Parker's day there.

Sea Breeze Lodge on Hornby Island is our favourite oceanfront wedding venue in British Columbia: a family-run resort on eleven acres of beachfront, with a driftwood ceremony arbour above the rocks, seventeen cottages for your people, and a dining room that seats up to 130 beside the sea.

We have photographed and filmed weddings all over the coast, and there is nowhere our team packs for with more anticipation. This is why, plus a look at Kirsten and Parker’s day there through Stephanie Artuso’s photographs.

Why Do We Love Sea Breeze Lodge So Much?

The same family has run Sea Breeze Lodge since 1972, and they have been hosting weddings there since the early eighties. That history is something you can feel. Nothing about the place is styled to look coastal; it simply is coastal, worn in by fifty years of summers. The lodge calls itself "utterly romantic," and honestly, we have no notes. Couples do not rent a ballroom here. They take over a small world for a weekend, and their guests get to live inside it.

A Beachside Ceremony Between Sea and Sky

The ceremony site sits on grass above the rocky shoreline, where a weathered driftwood arbour frames the water, the mainland mountains, and a great deal of sky. As photographers, we love how the setting does the decorating: pampas grass and ferns against silvered wood, white fabric moving in the breeze, and that deep Salish Sea blue behind every vow. The light stays soft and generous through the afternoon, which means couples can be present instead of chasing portraits.

What Makes a Sea Breeze Lodge Wedding Weekend Different?

A wedding weekend at the lodge is a takeover, not a timeslot. Wedding parties get exclusive access to the whole property: seventeen ocean-view cottages sleeping around eighty guests, a licensed bar pouring craft cocktails, a hot tub perched above the surf, a grass tennis court, lawn games, and a beachside fire pit. The kitchen feeds everyone three meals a day, and the vaulted dining room holds up to 130 for the reception with ocean views from every seat. By Sunday, two families have become one neighbourhood.

Everything we love about this venue is visible in one recent celebration. Kirsten and Parker’s Sea Breeze Lodge wedding brought two families to Hornby for a weekend of handmade details: a custom-sewn dress, island florals, hand-forged rings, and their two dogs weaving between guests. Stephanie Artuso, one of our collective’s photographers, documented it all with the ease and warmth she is known for. The photographs throughout this article, and the full gallery below, are hers.

How Do You Plan a Hornby Island Wedding?

Getting there is a small pilgrimage: drive to Buckley Bay on Vancouver Island, ferry to Denman Island, cross Denman, then catch a second short ferry to Hornby. That double crossing filters the day down to people who truly want to be there. Book the lodge early, especially for summer weekends, and line up your vendors just as soon. Our team handles wedding photography, film, and tintype across the Gulf Islands, and Hornby is a trip we never turn down.

A Venue We Keep Coming Back To

Some venues photograph beautifully. Fewer of them feel like somewhere you would want to stay after the job is done. Sea Breeze checks both boxes, which is why it sits so near the top of our list of places to work. If you are dreaming about a wedding by the water, learn more about our collective or get in touch. We would love to ride those two ferries for you.
