Frequently Asked Questions about West Coast Sailboat Wedding Venues

1. How many guests can the Providence accommodate for a wedding?

Providence is best suited for intimate weddings, elopements, and small gatherings of up to 20 guests. The ship’s size creates a cozy, adventurous atmosphere where every guest feels part of the experience.

2. What makes Providence unique as a West Coast Sailboat Wedding Venue?

Built in 1903 and lovingly restored, Providence is an 80-foot gaff-rigged ketch with over a century of history. Weddings aboard are steeped in nautical romance, sails filled with wind, the creak of the wooden hull, and panoramic views of the Salish Sea. It’s a venue designed for poetic, unforgettable moments that simply can’t be recreated on land.

3. When is the best time of year to book a Providence wedding?

Providence sails seasonally in the protected waters of the Salish Sea. The most popular months are late spring through early fall, when weather is warmest and seas are calmest. Shoulder seasons can also be beautiful for couples seeking dramatic skies and quieter waters.

4. Can both the ceremony and reception take place on board?

Yes. Many couples exchange vows on deck surrounded by ocean views, followed by a curated onboard celebration. We can also get creative, your ceremony could take place on a secluded beach that we sail out to, blending land and sea into your experience. Couples may also choose to host their reception onboard or continue the celebration with a larger gathering on land at one of Salt Spring Island’s venues or restaurants.

5. Can we have catering and dining on board?

Yes. Full dinners and intimate receptions can be hosted on the Providence, with catering thoughtfully adapted to the ship’s setting. For couples who prefer, dining can also take place on land after sailing, combining the adventure of a nautical ceremony with a sit-down meal at a partner venue. Folklore works closely with local chefs and caterers to ensure every meal feels connected to the spirit of Salt Spring Island.

6. Is Providence safe and accessible for guests?

Safety is the highest priority. Providence is fully compliant with Transport Canada regulations and operated by licensed, certified crew. Guests are considered “guest crew” and may join in sailing activities, though no experience is required. Because Providence is a traditional tall ship, it is not wheelchair accessible, and guests should be comfortable moving around a working vessel. Children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

7. What is Folklore Wedding Company’s role on Providence?

Folklore Wedding Company handles planning, coordination, and media for sailboat weddings. Our planners work with the Providence crew and local vendors to manage timelines, décor, catering, and on-the-day logistics, so couples can simply soak in the experience. Our creative collective documents each celebration with photography, videography, and unique offerings like Super 8 film, 35mm photography, and tintype portraits. We also collaborate with local chefs, florists, and designers to bring each couple’s vision to life.

8. How will meals work on the Providence?

To keep the experience comfortable and seamless, lighter fare such as charcuterie platters and beautifully prepared appetizers will be enjoyed on board during your sail. For micro weddings, the main dinner takes place back on land, either at a local restaurant we collaborate with, or as an outdoor dinner that Folklore and our food partners thoughtfully set up. For elopements with just the two of you, or a very small group, the full dinner can be hosted on board, creating an intimate dining experience at sea surrounded by the beauty of the coast.

9. What happens if the weather isn’t perfect?

Weddings aboard Providence are a wonderful fit for couples who embrace the rugged West Coast and all its moods. In some cases, when there’s little or no wind, sailing may be limited, but the ship itself provides a stunning setting whether at anchor or under sail. If rain arrives, we provide clear umbrellas for the couple and all guests so the experience stays beautiful, comfortable, and memorable.

10. Do we need to work with Folklore’s photographers and media team?

Not at all. While many couples choose to work with our in-house media team because we know our partner venues intimately and have a seamless working relationship between planning and media, we are always happy to collaborate with outside creatives. The benefit of keeping everything under the Folklore umbrella is efficiency and consistency, our planners and photographers are already aligned on timelines, lighting, and location logistics, but if you have another photographer or filmmaker in mind, we’ll gladly integrate them into your wedding plan.
