Frequently Asked Questions about Salt Spring Island Weddings

1. How do we get to Salt Spring Island?

Salt Spring is accessible by ferry from Vancouver, Victoria, and Crofton, with three terminals connecting different parts of the island. In summer, it’s smart to reserve ahead and allow extra time for busy sailings. Seaplanes also fly daily into Ganges Harbour, offering a quick and scenic option. Once on the island, guests can drive, take the community bus, or book local shuttles. Folklore Wedding Company helps couples share clear travel info with guests, and we can arrange group transport or shuttles to make travel smooth and stress-free.

2. When is the best time for a wedding?

The most popular months are May through September, when the island has long days, mild temperatures, and minimal rain. Spring brings lush greenery and wildflowers, while fall offers warm light and a quieter pace. Winter weddings are more intimate and cozy, but also wetter with shorter days. Folklore works with each couple to choose the best timing for their celebration and always includes a weather-ready plan so you can relax no matter the forecast.

3. Can our guests stay on the island?

Yes, there are hotels, B&Bs, vacation rentals, and farm stays throughout the island. Options range from simple to luxury, but they book quickly in peak season. We recommend couples secure accommodations early, especially if many guests are traveling. Folklore helps by suggesting stays that match different styles and budgets, arranging group bookings when possible, and ensuring your guests feel at home during the wedding weekend.

4. What kinds of settings are available for weddings?

Salt Spring’s beauty means you can exchange vows by the ocean, in a meadow, beneath old-growth trees, or in a cozy indoor space. The island lends itself well to both intimate elopements and mid-sized gatherings, with settings that highlight the natural landscape. Folklore guides couples through the options, manages any necessary permits, and designs layouts that make the most of the scenery while keeping logistics seamless.

5. Do we need to bring in off-island vendors?

Not at all. Salt Spring has a vibrant community of florists, chefs, bakers, and musicians. Choosing local talent not only simplifies logistics but also connects your day to the island itself. Folklore coordinates all vendor details, blending trusted local partners with our in-house photography and video services. This ensures every element is cohesive, creative, and stress-free.

6. What about permits and licenses?

Couples will need a BC marriage license, and depending on the celebration, possibly an alcohol permit or event insurance. Ceremonies in public spaces may also require special permission. Folklore helps couples navigate these requirements, handling applications and reminding you of deadlines so nothing is overlooked. Our team ensures that the legal and logistical details are handled with ease.

7. How do we plan for the weather?

Summer weather is generally reliable, but the island can bring cool evenings, mist, or occasional showers. Having a backup plan is important, whether that’s a tent, covered area, or flexible timeline. Folklore creates weather-ready plans for every couple, from arranging tents and umbrellas to adjusting schedules. That way, the island’s natural

8. Is Salt Spring a good choice for sustainable weddings?

Yes, many couples choose the island for its eco-friendly spirit. Local food, flowers, and wine keep things rooted in the community and minimize transport. Guests can carpool, use shuttles, or even explore by bike. Folklore helps integrate these choices, connecting couples with sustainable options and designing weddings that reflect Salt Spring’s values while keeping things beautiful and memorable.

9. How accessible is the island for guests with mobility needs?

Salt Spring is rural, but ferries, buses, and some shuttles are wheelchair-friendly, and many spaces can be adapted for guests with different needs. Folklore helps ensure accessibility is considered at every step, from ceremony locations to transportation and seating. Our team makes thoughtful adjustments so that every guest feels comfortable and included.

10. What can guests do while visiting?

Salt Spring is a destination in itself. Guests can explore beaches, hike scenic trails, wander the artisan market, taste local wines and cheeses, or enjoy live music in Ganges. The island offers both adventure and relaxation, making a wedding weekend feel like a getaway. Folklore often creates welcome guides or organizes group activities so your guests can experience the best of Salt Spring around your celebration.
