It is the people. Salt Spring is a small place with a deep bench of talent, and there is a particular kind of magic that happens when the florist grew the flowers, the cook knows the farmer, and the band has played the hall before. Nothing has to be trucked in or dressed up. The food tastes like the season, the blooms look like the roadside in July, and everyone in the room is, in some quiet way, connected. Who were the vendors behind this Salt Spring Island wedding?

Catering came from Sweetgrass Food Co., the Salt Spring cooks behind those beloved Thursday backdoor dinners, who bring gourmet to home-style cooking rooted in seasonal, locally sourced produce and the island's own farmers. The florals were by Buttercup Sandwich, Lolo Hendin's flower-farming and design studio, who grows and gathers seasonal, island-grown blooms and shapes them around the couple rather than a set formula. The cake came from Love's Galettes, and there was music all day: live sets from Caraluna and a dance floor kept moving by DJ Cat NeSs. Photography was by Sydney Woodward, blending digital, 35mm film and tintype into something that feels timeless and personal.

When the florist grew the flowers and the cook knows the farmer, a wedding stops feeling staged and starts feeling like the island simply gathered to celebrate two of its own.

By the end of the night, with the last of Caraluna's songs still hanging in the air and Cat NeSs turning the room over to dancing, the thing we kept coming back to was how much of Salt Spring was in that one place. Every plate, every stem, every slice of cake had a name and a face behind it, and most of those faces were neighbours. That is the quiet gift of getting married here.
